Turkey Hunting

Hunting Information

The Bearlodge Ranger District is home to numerous whitetail and mule deer. Over the last seven or eight years, the District has partnered with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department to increase the average age of bucks and to increase buck/doe ratios. Over this time the District Ranger has placed 25% to 35% of the District in non-motorized areas. These areas are very attractive to hunters seeking solitude. They afford deer a better chance to escape, but they also afford a better chance at a larger buck. Expect to use more stalking skills.

Successful hunters often take bucks with 4-5 points to a side in non-motorized areas. However, very large, heavy racks are not common. The remainder of the District is also good hunting, especially if one is willing to walk some distrances from an open road or ATV trail.

The Bearlodge Ranger District provides excellent spring, summer, and fall turkey habitats. The District features numerous bur oak bottoms and grassy openings. A newly implemented Forest Plan and more intensive grazing management is improving poult rearing and wintering habitat. You will find a variety of motorized and non-motorized hunting opportunities.

Although the population has been low, brood counts average seven poults per hen. If there is good winter survival, the spring season will offer much better opportunity to find a gobbler. However, expect most gobblers to be jakes.

For more information on the hunting regulations regarding any of the hunt seasons in our area, contact the Wyoming Game and Fish Department at 307-777-4600.
